Escherichia coli causes diarrhoea through five distinct pathogenic mechanisms, including enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC) and enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) for noninflammatory, and enteroinvasive E. coli (EIEC), enterohaemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC), and enteroaggregative E. coli (EAggEC) for inflammatory types.
