Summary

Motion detection thresholds (MDT) can predict future visual field loss in normal tension glaucoma patients. An abnormal MDT test in the unaffected eye indicates a high risk of developing glaucoma-related visual field deterioration.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess if motion detection thresholds (MDT) can predict visual field deterioration in normal tension glaucoma patients.

Main Methods:

  • MDT was measured in the unaffected eye of 51 normal tension glaucoma patients.
  • Humphrey visual fields were monitored for progression over a mean of 3.4 years.
  • Pointwise linear regression analysis was used to assess visual field changes.

Main Results:

  • 22 of 51 eyes showed visual field deterioration within 1.7 years.

  • Abnormal MDT predicted deterioration within the closest four Humphrey locations with 73% sensitivity and 90% specificity.
  • Sensitivity was lower (40%) for distant locations, but specificity remained high (90%).
  • Conclusions:

    • MDT is a sensitive predictor of localized visual field loss in normal tension glaucoma.
    • Early detection of visual dysfunction using MDT may aid in monitoring glaucoma progression.
