Summary

Schizophrenia patients with positive symptoms showed no significant prefrontal cortex volume differences. However, a link between left prefrontal gray matter and temporal lobe structures was observed in the schizophrenia group.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate prefrontal cortical volume in schizophrenic subjects with predominantly positive symptoms.
  • To determine if prefrontal cortex volume is affected in schizophrenia, particularly in relation to prior findings of temporal lobe abnormalities.

Main Methods:

  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was used to obtain brain scans.
  • 14 men with chronic schizophrenia and 15 age- and IQ-matched male controls participated.
  • Contiguous 1.5-mm brain slices were analyzed for volumetric differences.

Main Results:

  • No significant differences in prefrontal white or gray matter volume were found between schizophrenic and control subjects.
  • A correlation between left prefrontal gray matter and left temporal lobe structure volumes was identified within the schizophrenic group.
  • This correlation was absent in the control group.

Conclusions:

  • Gross volumetric abnormalities of the prefrontal cortex were not evident in this group of schizophrenic patients with positive symptoms.
  • Temporal lobe abnormalities may coexist with normal prefrontal cortex volumes in certain schizophrenia presentations.
  • Findings suggest a complex relationship between different brain regions in schizophrenia.
