Mesenteric cysts are rare abdominal tumors. Surgical treatment, including enucleation or segmental bowel resection, is effective for these rare tumors, with the small bowel being the most common location.

Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Surgical Oncology

Background:

  • Mesenteric cysts are uncommon intra-abdominal neoplasms with a reported incidence ranging from 1 in 27,000 to 1 in 250,000 hospital admissions.
  • These cysts can present as incidental findings or manifest with symptoms related to mass effect or complications.

Observation:

  • A retrospective review identified five patients treated for mesenteric cysts between 1982 and 1992.
  • The majority of cysts (60%) were located in the small bowel mesentery.

Findings:

  • All five patients underwent surgical intervention for their mesenteric cysts.
  • Enucleation was the preferred surgical approach in 40% of cases, while the remaining patients required segmental bowel resection.

Implications:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Surgical management remains the cornerstone for mesenteric cysts, with enucleation being ideal when feasible.
  • Understanding common locations and surgical outcomes aids in patient management and surgical planning for these rare tumors.
