Summary

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is linked to smaller caudate nucleus volumes in the brain. This neuroimaging study found reduced caudate size in OCD patients compared to healthy controls, suggesting its involvement in the disorder.

  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is hypothesized to involve abnormalities in cortical-striatal-thalamic-cortical circuits.
  • This study investigated specific brain regions implicated in these circuits.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the volumes of specific brain structures in patients with OCD compared to healthy controls.
  • To determine if structural brain volume differences correlate with OCD symptom severity or duration.

Main Methods:

  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans were used to analyze brain structures.
  • Volumes of the prefrontal cortex, caudate nucleus, lateral and third ventricles, and whole brain were measured.
  • 26 patients with OCD and 26 healthy controls participated in the study.
