Summary

The Kluyveromyces lactis cytochrome c gene (KICYC1) shows higher nucleotide homology with Schwanniomyces occidentalis than Saccharomyces cerevisiae. This yeast cytochrome c analysis refines phylogenetic relationships, linking Kluyveromyces lactis most closely to Candida krusei.

  • * Genetics

Background:

  • * Cytochrome c is a vital protein in cellular respiration across eukaryotes.
  • * Comparative genomics of yeast cytochrome c genes can reveal evolutionary insights.
  • * Kluyveromyces lactis cytochrome c (KICYC1) sequence data provides a basis for evolutionary studies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • * To analyze the nucleotide and amino acid sequences of the KICYC1 gene.
  • * To establish homologies between KICYC1 and cytochrome c genes from other yeasts and fungi.
  • * To determine the phylogenetic relationship of Kluyveromyces lactis based on cytochrome c sequence data.

Main Methods:

  • * Sequence analysis of the KICYC1 gene.
  • * Nucleotide composition comparison with homologous genes from Schwanniomyces occidentalis, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and Neurospora crassa.

Related Experiment Videos

  • * Amino acid sequence comparison to infer phylogenetic relationships.
  • Main Results:

    • * KICYC1 exhibited higher nucleotide homology with Schwanniomyces occidentalis than Saccharomyces cerevisiae.
    • * Codon usage differences between these yeasts were discussed in relation to homology.
    • * Phylogenetic analysis based on amino acid sequences indicated Kluyveromyces lactis is most closely related to Candida krusei.
