Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from asymptomatic HIV+ patients showed cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) activity against HIV-1 antigens. In contrast, PBMCs from AIDS patients exhibited reduced CTL activity and apoptosis, indicating immune system decline.
