Educational and research aspects of a school-based sterilization monitoring service
1Infection Control Research and Services, Indiana University School of Dentistry, Indianapolis, USA.
Abstract:
A dental school-based sterilization monitoring service can offer benefits to both the school and the private practitioner. It can foster the development of bonds between the school and the private practice community. It offers the private practitioner a service and a source for answers to infection-control questions. It offers the school an opportunity to extend the arm of the university into the dental community with newsletters, continuing education in the area of infection control, and other approaches to learning. The school also may be able to involve the service or use the service's facilities/equipment in research with appropriate consent from the clients.

Cleaning
The cleaning process usually involves using water with detergents or enzymatic cleaner and removing foreign material from objects and surfaces, including organic material such as body fluids or inorganic material like soil. Cleaning is performed before high-level disinfection and sterilization because foreign materials on the cover of the devices interfere with process...
Methods of Sterilization I: Physical Methods
Steam sterilization uses non-toxic, low-cost moist heat in the form of saturated steam under pressure, which is fast, microbicidal, and sporicidal, and quickly warms and penetrates fabrics. Autoclaves, or steam sterilizers, expose each item to direct steam contact for a predetermined time at the necessary...
Methods of Sterilization II: Chemical Methods
Using chemical sterilization rather than heat to clean out equipment is recommended. It eradicates and removes all bacteria,...
