Background:

  • Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) are uncommon bone lesions.
  • Involvement of the hand bones by ABCs is exceptionally rare.

Observation:

  • A case of an aneurysmal bone cyst involving the lunate bone of the hand is presented.
  • The lesion was initially misdiagnosed as an interosseous ganglion cyst.

Findings:

  • Delayed diagnosis led to significant destruction of the lunate bone.
  • Surgical management required excision of the cyst and scapho-capitate arthrodesis.

Implications:

  • Aneurysmal bone cysts should be considered in the differential diagnosis of hand bone lesions.
  • Prompt and accurate diagnosis is essential to avoid extensive bone damage and complex surgical interventions.
