Abstract:
Metabolic and nutritional studies with stable isotope tracers have proved valuable in the human newborn. This technique is acceptable ethically, because it does not expose the infant to radioactivity, and it is sensitive enough for the analysis of very small samples. The stable isotope method has been especially applied to studies of neonatal carbohydrate, protein, and energy metabolism.
