Cystic meningiomas, though uncommon, are distinct subtypes requiring separate consideration. These tumors are rarely malignant, with cysts found either within or surrounding the meningioma.

Area of Science:

  • Neurosurgery
  • Oncology
  • Radiology

Background:

  • Meningiomas are typically solid tumors, readily diagnosed via CT and MRI.
  • Rarely, meningiomas present with cysts (intratumoral or peritumoral), complicating diagnosis.
  • Understanding cystic meningioma subtypes is crucial for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.

Observation:

  • A retrospective study analyzed 17 cystic meningiomas (7.3% of total meningiomas) from 1984-1993.
  • Eleven cases featured intratumoral cysts, while 6 had peritumoral cysts; one case had both.
  • Cystic meningiomas predominantly occurred in the fourth and fifth decades of life.

Findings:

  • Peritumoral cysts were mostly associated with meningotheliomatous meningiomas and more common in males.
  • Intratumoral cysts, more frequent in females, were histologically angioblastic or meningotheliomatous.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Malignant (anaplastic) meningiomas were rare among the studied cystic cases.
  • Implications:

    • Cystic meningiomas, while not common, are significant and warrant distinct classification.
    • Differentiating between intratumoral and peritumoral cysts aids in surgical and diagnostic approaches.
    • The low incidence of malignancy in cystic meningiomas suggests a generally favorable prognosis.
