Abstract:
We have investigated whether separate supraspinal systems exist that mediate overruling, local modulation, initiation and termination of the spinal network for locomotion. We show that the overruling and modulating systems lie intermingled in the brainstem, but can be separated by several criteria. Initiation and termination probably relate to one system which is functionally and anatomically separable from the overruling and modulating systems.
