Background:
- Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease characterized by cartilage breakdown and inflammation.

Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate serum phospholipase A2 activity levels in patients with osteoarthritis.
- To determine the correlation between sPLA2 activity and clinical and radiographic markers of OA severity and progression.
Main Methods:
- Serum sPLA2 activity was measured using a radiolabeled specific substrate in 67 OA patients and 17 controls.
- Correlation analyses were performed between sPLA2 activity and various clinical parameters (age, symptom duration, morning stiffness, Lequesne's index) and radiographic features (joint space loss, number of affected joints).
- Longitudinal assessment of sPLA2 activity changes in relation to OA progression was conducted in a subset of patients.

- sPLA2 activity showed no significant correlation with age, symptom duration, morning stiffness, Lequesne's index, radiographic stage, number of affected joints, ESR, or CRP levels.
- Changes in sPLA2 activity did not correlate with changes in Lequesne's index over time, and increases in sPLA2 activity were observed in patients with progressive joint space loss, but not to a statistically significant degree compared to controls.
Conclusions:
- While serum phospholipase A2 activity is elevated in osteoarthritis patients, it does not serve as a reliable biomarker for disease severity or progression.
- The lack of correlation with clinical and radiographic parameters suggests sPLA2 activity is not practically useful for monitoring osteoarthritis in clinical settings.
