Treating and preventing kidney stones

Kidney stones usually develop when urine becomes concentrated and crystals form. These stones can lodge anywhere in the urinary system and cause severe pain. Most stones pass spontaneously, but 20% of all patients receive medical intervention. Noninvasive approaches and conventional surgery are used. Nurses assess and monitor patients through diagnosis and treatment, and teach patients how to avoid a recurrence.
