A six-month-old Basset Hound experienced eye watering and facial swelling due to a nasal cyst. Surgical treatment of this dacryops, a lacrimal gland cyst, resolved the condition.

Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Medicine
  • Ophthalmology
  • Anatomic Pathology

Background:

  • Dacryops, a cyst originating from the lacrimal gland, can cause significant clinical signs in animals.
  • Epiphora and facial swelling are common presenting complaints associated with orbital and nasal masses.

Observation:

  • A six-month-old Basset Hound presented with unilateral right epiphora and medial canthal/maxillary bone swelling.
  • Diagnostic imaging, including skull radiographs and dacryocystorhinography, identified a nasal cyst and right nasolacrimal duct obstruction.

Findings:

  • Laboratory analysis confirmed the nasal cyst as a dacryops.
  • The cyst was identified as being of lacrimal gland origin.

Implications:

Related Experiment Videos

  • This case highlights the importance of considering dacryops in the differential diagnosis for epiphora and facial swelling in young dogs.
  • Successful surgical management, involving drainage and curettage, offers a positive prognosis for dacryops.
  • Further research into the etiology and پیشگیری of dacryops in canines may be warranted.
