Background:

The Power Management Inventory (PMI) is a tool used to assess power dynamics.
Validation of the PMI is crucial for its reliable application in healthcare settings.

Purpose of the Study:

To present the psychometric properties of Part I of the Power Management Inventory (PMI).
To validate the PMI using samples of nurse managers and executives.

Main Methods:

Content validity indices were calculated for management issues, Personalized Power (PP), Socialized Power (SP), and Affiliative Motive (AM) scales.
Internal consistency reliabilities and test-retest correlations were assessed.
Correlations between nurse manager/executive scores and subordinate/CEO scores were analyzed.

Main Results:

Content validity indices ranged from .65 to .85.
Internal consistency reliabilities were acceptable (.63–.87), and test-retest correlations were strong (.74–.85).
Significant correlations were found between manager/executive scores and subordinate/CEO scores for PP and AM.

Conclusions:

The PMI demonstrates acceptable psychometric properties for use with nurse managers and executives.
The study does not recommend the PMI for career counseling in nursing.
The PMI is endorsed as a useful organizational development tool within nursing.
