    Summary

Mycobacteria were found in 67% of sarcoidosis patients, with typical Mycobacterium tuberculosis increasing during acute phases. This suggests sarcoidosis may be a chronic infection caused by mycobacteria.

    Area of Science:

    • Microbiology
    • Immunology
    • Infectious Diseases

    Background:

    • Sarcoidosis is an inflammatory disease of unknown etiology.
    • Previous studies have suggested a potential role for mycobacteria in sarcoidosis pathogenesis.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the presence and forms of mycobacteria in sarcoidosis patients.
    • To explore the correlation between mycobacterial detection and clinical sarcoidosis presentation.
    • To discuss the etiological significance of mycobacteria in sarcoidosis.

    Main Methods:

    • Microbiological diagnostic methods.
    • Polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based amplification test systems for Mycobacterium tuberculosis detection.

    Main Results:

    Related Experiment Videos

    • Mycobacteria were detected in 67% of sarcoidosis patient specimens.
    • Granular mycobacteria forms were prevalent in sluggish sarcoidosis cases.
    • Typical Mycobacterium tuberculosis proportion increased during acute sarcoidosis and exacerbations.

    Conclusions:

    • Mycobacteria, including typical Mycobacterium tuberculosis and granular forms, are frequently found in sarcoidosis.
    • The type and proportion of detected mycobacteria correlate with sarcoidosis clinical course.
    • Sarcoidosis may be a chronic infectious disease caused by mycobacteria, warranting further etiological investigation.
