Summary

Psoriasis treatment with UVB, beta-methasone dipropionate, and salicylic acid reduced skin levels of interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor alpha. These cytokines may serve as markers for monitoring psoriasis disease severity and treatment response.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Immunology
  • Biochemistry

Background:

  • Cytokines play a role in the development of psoriasis.
  • Interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) are implicated in psoriasis pathogenesis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between psoriasis severity and skin levels of IL-6 and TNF-α.
  • To assess changes in IL-6 and TNF-α levels during treatment.

Main Methods:

  • Suction blister fluids were collected from involved and uninvolved skin of 6 psoriasis patients.
  • Cytokine levels were measured using ELISA.
  • Patients received treatment with UVB, beta-methasone dipropionate, and salicylic acid ointment.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • All patients showed significant improvement in psoriasis severity (PASI score decreased from 13.4 to 3.9).
  • Significant reductions in IL-6 and TNF-α levels were observed in all samples during treatment.
  • Cytokine levels decreased in both involved and uninvolved skin areas.

Conclusions:

  • IL-6 and TNF-α are functionally involved in psoriasis pathogenesis.
  • These cytokines may be useful as follow-up markers for monitoring disease activity and treatment efficacy in psoriasis.
