Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Oncology
  • Thoracic Surgery
  • Pulmonology

Background:

  • Leiomyomas are benign smooth muscle tumors.
  • Pulmonary leiomyomas are exceptionally rare, particularly in pediatric populations.
  • Endobronchial localization of these tumors presents unique diagnostic and therapeutic challenges.

Observation:

  • An 8-year-old male presented with symptoms secondary to a large endobronchial mass.
  • The mass was identified as a leiomyoma.
  • The tumor's intraluminal growth led to complete obstruction of the left main bronchus.

Findings:

  • The pediatric patient experienced total atelectasis of the left lung due to the endobronchial leiomyoma.
  • Surgical resection was performed to address the airway obstruction and lung collapse.
  • Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of leiomyoma.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the importance of considering rare tumors in the differential diagnosis of pediatric airway obstruction.
  • Early diagnosis and surgical intervention are crucial for managing endobronchial leiomyomas in children.
  • Further research into the etiology and optimal management of pediatric pulmonary leiomyomas is warranted.
