Summary

Thyroid ultrasound can help evaluate autoimmune thyroiditis in children with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. Increased thyroid volume was observed in diabetic patients with positive thyroid antibodies.

Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Endocrinology
  • Radiology
  • Immunology

Background:

  • Insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) frequently co-occurs with autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT).
  • Thyroid antibodies (TA) are common in IDDM patients.
  • Thyroid ultrasound is a potential tool for assessing AIT.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate thyroid ultrasound findings in children with IDDM.
  • To correlate ultrasound findings with the presence of TA and thyroid function.

Main Methods:

  • Ultrasound examination of the thyroid in 83 IDDM patients (age 2.3-22.3 years).
  • Comparison of thyroid volume with 75 healthy children.
  • Assessment of TA positivity and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • No significant difference in thyroid volume between IDDM patients and controls aged 4-12 years.
  • TA positivity in 18.8% of IDDM patients.
  • Higher thyroid volume in TA-positive IDDM patients, potentially linked to elevated TSH.
  • Two IDDM patients showed ultrasound findings consistent with AIT, confirmed in one by biopsy.

Conclusions:

  • Thyroid ultrasound can aid in evaluating AIT in children with IDDM.
  • Elevated thyroid volume in TA-positive IDDM patients warrants further investigation.
  • Ultrasound may identify subclinical AIT in this population.
