Summary

Factor XIIIa (FXIIIa) is present in dermal dendrocytes, mast cells, and endothelial cells. These cells, involved in angiogenesis and fibrovascular processes, appear functionally related.

Background:

  • Factor XIIIa (FXIIIa) is an enzyme found in various cell types.
  • Dermal dendrocytes, mast cells, and endothelial cells play roles in tissue repair and vascularization.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the presence and localization of FXIIIa in specific skin lesions.
  • To explore potential functional relationships between FXIIIa-expressing cells in the microvasculature.

Main Methods:

  • Immunohistochemical staining of skin biopsies (dermatofibromas, basal cell epithelioma, Kaposi's sarcoma, angiolymphoid hyperplasia with eosinophilia, malignant mastocytosis) using antibody to FXIIIa.
  • Tissue embedding using Lowicryl K4M, Epon, or Araldite.

Main Results:

  • FXIIIa labeling was observed in dermal dendrocytes, mast cells, and endothelial cells across various embedded tissues.
  • In dermal dendrocytes, FXIIIa was found in the rough endoplasmic reticulum and cytoplasm.
  • In endothelial cells, FXIIIa localized to Weibel-Palade bodies, cytoplasm, and villous projections; in mast cells, it was exclusively in granules.

Conclusions:

  • Dermal dendrocytes, mast cells, and endothelial cells consistently express FXIIIa.
  • These cell types are part of the microvascular unit and are upregulated during angiogenesis and fibrovascular processes.
  • The shared expression of FXIIIa suggests a functional relationship between these cells in vascular and tissue remodeling.
