Background:

  • The role of nitric oxide (NO) in heart failure remains unclear.
  • The inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) is found in the heart muscle of patients with idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the role of nitric oxide in heart failure.
  • To determine if nitric oxide production is altered in patients with heart failure.

Main Methods:

  • Measured plasma nitrate levels, a stable indicator of nitric oxide production.
  • Compared nitrate levels in patients with heart failure to healthy individuals.

Main Results:

  • Plasma nitrate levels were significantly higher in heart failure patients (51.3 mumol/L) than in controls (24.6 mumol/L).
  • Increased nitric oxide may be a compensatory mechanism for heart failure-related vasoconstriction.

Conclusions:

  • Elevated nitric oxide production is observed in heart failure.
  • This increase may have both beneficial (vasodilation) and detrimental (negative inotropic effect) consequences in heart failure.
