Background:

Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is a vasculitis with a variable incidence globally.
Previous data suggested a very low incidence of GCA among Jewish populations.
Understanding GCA epidemiology in diverse ethnic groups is crucial for public health.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the epidemiology, ethnic background, and seasonality of GCA in the Jewish population of Jerusalem.
To compare current GCA incidence rates with historical data for Jewish populations.
To identify demographic and temporal patterns of GCA onset.

Main Methods:

Retrospective study of biopsy-proven GCA cases.
Inclusion of 84 patients diagnosed between 1980 and 1991 in Jerusalem.
Age, sex, and period-adjusted incidence calculation.

Main Results:

An age, sex, and period-adjusted incidence of 10.2 per 100,000 population (aged ≥50 years) was observed.
This represents an approximate 20-fold increase compared to historical data for Jewish populations (1960-1978).
The female:male ratio was 1.6, with a declining trend in incidence for men but not women. Onset was more common in early summer.

Conclusions:

The incidence of GCA among Jerusalem's Jewish population is significantly higher than previously reported.
GCA epidemiology shows distinct patterns in this population, including a notable increase from historical rates.
Further research is needed to understand the factors contributing to GCA in this demographic.
