    Summary

    Optic nerve head drusen are often associated with optic nerve atrophy and peripapillary crowding. These deposits are primarily a mucoprotein matrix with acid mucopolysaccharides.

    Background:

    • Optic nerve head drusen are abnormal calcified deposits within the optic nerve.

    • To investigate the histopathologic features of optic nerve head drusen.
    • To identify associated ocular conditions and analyze the composition of drusen.

    • Review of 52 eyes with optic nerve head drusen from autopsy and surgical files.
    • Histochemical and electron microscopic examination of drusen.
