Area of Science:

  • Infectious Diseases
  • Surgical Critical Care
  • Abdominal Medicine

Background:

  • Intraabdominal sepsis presents complex challenges in pathogenesis and microbiology.
  • Historically, high mortality rates were associated with intraabdominal infections.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review recent advances in the diagnosis and treatment of intraabdominal sepsis.
  • To highlight improvements in antimicrobial therapy and supportive care.

Main Methods:

  • Review of recent literature on intraabdominal sepsis.
  • Analysis of diagnostic imaging techniques (CT, ultrasonography).
  • Evaluation of treatment modalities including percutaneous drainage and antimicrobial agents.

Main Results:

  • Computed tomography and ultrasonography have improved intraabdominal abscess diagnosis.
  • Percutaneous drainage is a viable alternative to surgery for abscess management.
  • A wider range of less-toxic antimicrobial agents are now available.
  • Supportive therapies have dramatically improved patient survival.

Conclusions:

  • Significant progress has been made in understanding and managing intraabdominal sepsis.
  • Current diagnostic and therapeutic strategies have enhanced patient outcomes.
  • Continued research is needed to define the role of novel surgical approaches.
