Summary

Thyroid procedures like percutaneous intranodular ethanol injection (PIEI), radioactive iodine (RAI), and fine needle aspiration (FNA) significantly increase serum interleukin-6 (IL-6). This suggests IL-6 is a useful marker for thyroid-destructive processes.

Background:

  • Elevated serum interleukin-6 (IL-6) is observed in subacute thyroiditis and amiodarone-induced thyrotoxicosis.
