Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the efficacy of various biocides in oil-in-water (O/W) and water-in-oil (W/O) emulsion creams and toothpastes.

Main Methods:

  • A 28-day "conservation test" was performed on model creams and commercial toothpastes.
  • Microorganisms recommended by the National Institute of Hygiene and cosmetic-isolated strains were used.
  • Initial microbial contamination levels were standardized to 10(6) cells/g.
  • A range of biocides including Nipagin, Kathon CG, Sepicide Cl, Chlor-hexidine gluconate, Gropol, and Bronopol were tested.

Main Results:
