Summary

A rare form of outer retinitis, potentially caused by herpesvirus, responded to acyclovir treatment. Despite vision preservation, a persistent visual field defect was noted after regression.

Background:

  • Acute progressive outer retinitis is a rare ocular condition.
  • Immunocompetent patients can be affected by viral retinitis.

Observation:

  • A case of uniocular acute progressive outer retinitis with curvilinear lesions was observed.
  • The retinitis demonstrated progressive enlargement and responded to intravenous acyclovir therapy.

Findings:

  • Post-treatment, the affected retina showed atrophy, intraretinal pigment migration, and choriocapillary atrophy.
  • Visual acuity remained unaffected, but a dense scotoma was detected via field testing.

Implications:

  • The response to acyclovir suggests a herpesvirus etiology for this type of retinitis.
  • Antiherpetic agents like acyclovir should be considered in managing similar clinical presentations.
