Summary

This study investigated immune system markers in chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). While some immune differences were observed, the findings do not confirm a direct link between immune system dysfunction and CFS.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify signs of immunodeficiencies or longstanding infections in patients with CFS.
  • To compare immune system parameters between CFS patients and healthy controls.

Main Methods:

  • Studied 21 CFS patients and 21 matched controls.
  • Assessed viral antibodies, autoantibody profiles, and immune cell functions (cytokine production, lymphocyte proliferation, NK cell activity, immunoglobulin levels).

  • Significantly higher in vitro production of interleukin-2 and interferon-gamma in CFS patients.
