Summary

Diclofenac use after tonsillectomy significantly increased post-operative bleeding risk. This non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) led to a higher incidence of reactionary haemorrhage requiring surgical intervention in patients.

Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Anesthesiology
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Tonsillectomy is a common surgical procedure.
  • Post-operative haemorrhage is a known complication.
  • Analgesic choice may influence bleeding risk.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the potential link between diclofenac and increased post-tonsillectomy bleeding.
  • To evaluate the incidence of reactionary haemorrhage associated with diclofenac use.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of patient casenotes from 1992.
  • Comparison of bleeding rates between patients receiving diclofenac and other analgesics.

Main Results:

  • A significant increase in reactionary post-operative haemorrhage was observed in 1992.
  • 5.5% of patients receiving diclofenac experienced haemorrhage requiring operative control.
  • 0.7% of patients receiving alternative analgesics experienced similar complications.

Conclusions:

  • Diclofenac administration at induction may be associated with a higher risk of reactionary haemorrhage after tonsillectomy.
  • Caution is advised when using diclofenac post-tonsillectomy.
  • Further research may be warranted to confirm this association.
