Area of Science:

  • Cardiovascular Surgery
  • Cardiac Surgery Innovations
  • Aortic Valve Repair

Background:

  • Aortic annulus enlargement presents surgical challenges.
  • Existing techniques for aortic annulus enlargement have limitations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To introduce and evaluate a new technique for aortic annulus enlargement.
  • To assess the efficacy of this new method in improving patient symptoms and preventing mitral valve complications.

Main Methods:

  • A novel surgical technique involving annular incision at specific points.
  • Use of prosthetic or pericardial patches for annulus enlargement.
  • Procedure performed on a cohort of 43 patients.

Main Results:

  • Symptomatic improvement observed in patients undergoing the procedure.
  • The technique demonstrated good preliminary results.
  • Potential to mitigate late complications affecting the mitral valve.

Conclusions:

  • The presented technique is an effective approach for aortic annulus enlargement.
  • This method is a viable alternative for preventing mitral valve issues post-surgery.
