Summary

New CCD camera systems offer accurate and reproducible mineral content analysis in dental research. These image analysis systems provide results comparable to traditional densitometer scanners for transversal microradiography.

Background:

  • Image analysis systems using video (CCD) cameras and software are increasingly replacing densitometer-based systems for mineral content profiling via transversal microradiography (TMR).
  • CCD cameras offer advantages in ease and speed of operation.
  • Densitometers, validated and considered a 'gold standard', have not been directly compared to CCD cameras for TMR microradiogram analysis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the accuracy and reproducibility of CCD camera systems versus densitometer-based systems for analyzing mineral content profiles using TMR.
  • To investigate potential limitations of CCD cameras, such as resolution, gray levels, and illumination homogeneity, compared to densitometers.

Main Methods:

  • Microradiograms of three lesion types (subsurface, surface-softened, laminated) were analyzed using both a CCD camera system and a densitometer.

  • Statistical analyses, including paired t tests and analysis of variance, were used to compare mineral content profiles and integrated mineral loss.

    • CCD camera-based image analysis systems provide mineral content profiles and integrated mineral loss measurements that are as accurate and reproducible as those obtained using densitometer systems.
    • CCD camera systems are a viable and effective alternative to densitometers for TMR analysis in dental research.
