Summary

This study shows that a third coronary angioplasty procedure for restenosis is highly successful. Most patients with recurrent restenosis after angioplasty remained asymptomatic after a third intervention.

Area of Science:

  • Cardiovascular Medicine
  • Interventional Cardiology
  • Vascular Surgery

Context:

  • Recurrent restenosis after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) poses a clinical challenge.
  • A significant subset of patients experience multiple restenotic events following initial angioplasty.
  • Evaluating outcomes of repeat interventions is crucial for managing complex coronary artery disease.

Purpose:

  • To assess the efficacy and outcomes of a third coronary angioplasty procedure in patients with documented second restenosis.
  • To determine the success rate, complication profile, and long-term results of repeat PCI.
  • To analyze the management strategies and clinical status following a third angioplasty intervention.

Summary:

  • A retrospective study of 39 patients with second restenosis after coronary angioplasty identified 33 who underwent a third procedure.
  • The third angioplasty achieved a 100% primary success rate without immediate complications.
  • At a mean follow-up of 22 months, 85% of patients were asymptomatic, with a 28% restenosis rate after the third procedure.

Impact:

  • The findings suggest that repeat coronary angioplasty is a safe and effective option for selected patients with multiple restenoses.
  • Successful third angioplasty can lead to sustained symptom relief and a high rate of asymptomatic status.
  • This study provides valuable data for interventional cardiologists managing patients with complex and recurrent coronary artery disease.
