Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Oncology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Primary spinal intramedullary malignant lymphoma is a rare condition.
  • Central nervous system lymphomas are increasingly recognized.

Observation:

  • A 48-year-old male presented with progressive paraplegia and urinary retention.
  • MRI revealed a thoracic spinal cord mass, initially suspected as a tumor.
  • Biopsy confirmed diffuse medium-sized cell malignant lymphoma.

Findings:

  • The patient was diagnosed with primary spinal intramedullary malignant lymphoma after excluding other sites.
  • Post-treatment, the spinal lesion resolved, but brain metastases appeared.
  • The patient succumbed to the disease 15 months after symptom onset.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the importance of considering lymphoma in the differential diagnosis of spinal cord tumors.
  • Further research into effective chemoradiotherapy regimens for primary spinal lymphoma is warranted.
  • Early diagnosis and comprehensive treatment strategies are crucial for improving patient outcomes.
