Summary

Myasthenia Gravis (MG) patients show impaired central nervous system cholinergic transmission, evidenced by abnormal PR-VEPs. Pyridostigmine treatment improved these visual pathway responses, suggesting PR-VEPs can monitor treatment efficacy.

Background:

  • Myasthenia Gravis (MG) is an autoimmune disorder affecting neuromuscular junctions.
  • Cholinergic pathways in the Central Nervous System (CNS) may be implicated in MG.
  • Assessing CNS involvement in MG requires reliable neurophysiological markers.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate potential impairment of cholinergic transmission in the CNS of MG patients.
  • To evaluate the effectiveness of pyridostigmine treatment on CNS cholinergic function in MG.
  • To determine the utility of Pattern Reversal Visual Evoked Potentials (PR-VEPs) in studying MG's central effects.

  • PR-VEPs were recorded in 11 newly diagnosed MG patients before and after pyridostigmine treatment.
