[Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment operated by extraocular implants. Apropos of 74 cases]

In a series of 88 cases of rhegmatogenous retinal detachments, 14 have been treated by vitrectomy and 74 by scleral buckling with or without intraocular gas tamponade. In 69 cases of the second group (93%) the retina was reattached with an extraocular intervention although 10 cases needed a second intervention. The 5 remaining cases (7%) needed a vitrectomy because of PVR. The reason for failure of extraocular technique is usually related to undertreatment of retinal tears.
