Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Clinical Medicine

Background:

  • The incidence of Clostridium difficile colitis has risen, likely due to broad-spectrum antibiotic use.
  • This condition poses a significant challenge in healthcare settings.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the patterns of Clostridium difficile colitis development.
  • To analyze associated morbidity and treatment outcomes.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective review of 90 patients diagnosed with Clostridium difficile colitis over 18 months.
  • Data collected included demographics, symptoms, antibiotic history, diagnostics, treatments, morbidity, and mortality.

Main Results:

  • Most patients (89%) received antibiotics prior to diagnosis; 46% developed colitis post-surgery.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Diarrhea was the primary symptom (91%). Vancomycin was the most common treatment (66%).
  • No associated morbidity was observed, and mortality (16%) was linked to underlying conditions.
  • Conclusions:

    • Clostridium difficile colitis in this cohort had no associated morbidity.
    • Treatment for Clostridium difficile colitis was highly effective.
    • Mortality was not directly caused by Clostridium difficile colitis but by patients' other medical conditions.
