Abstract:
Several classifications of diabetic retinopathy have been proposed. The most recent, used in the DRS and the ETDRS, are grading systems, based on the comparison of stereoscopic fundus photographs with color photographic standards. Fluorescein angiography is not used, and the DRS and ETDRS classifications are too complex for routine evaluation. Classifications using standardized vocabulary should provide more accurate assessment of diabetic severity and prognosis.
