Background:

  • Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a severe gastrointestinal emergency in neonates.
  • Tumour necrosis factor (TNF) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) are key inflammatory cytokines implicated in NEC pathogenesis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the correlation between plasma concentrations of TNF and IL-6 and the clinical severity of NEC in infants.
  • To determine if TNF or IL-6 levels can serve as predictive biomarkers for NEC progression and inform therapeutic strategies.

Main Methods:

  • Plasma samples from 24 infants diagnosed with NEC were collected between 0 and 306 hours post-diagnosis.
  • Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was employed to quantify TNF and IL-6 concentrations.
  • Cytokine levels were analyzed in relation to NEC stage (II and III) and time from diagnosis.

  • TNF was detected in 71% of samples but did not correlate with NEC stage or time from diagnosis.

  • The distinct patterns of IL-6 and TNF suggest differential roles in NEC pathogenesis and have implications for targeted anti-cytokine therapies.
