Diagnosing ulcerative colitis in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection is challenging. This study presents two cases, highlighting the potential link between HIV and inflammatory bowel disease, and their treatment outcomes.

Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Immunology

Background:

  • Ulcerative colitis (UC) is an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) with complex etiology.
  • Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection can alter immune responses, potentially influencing IBD development or presentation.

Observation:

  • Two cases of UC in patients with HIV infection are described.
  • Clinical history, colon biopsy, and CD4 cell counts were analyzed.

Findings:

  • Despite low CD4 cell counts in one patient, aggressive UC was observed.
  • Both patients showed good response to UC treatment, even with advanced HIV (AIDS).

Implications:

  • Further research on IBD in HIV-infected individuals is needed.
