Aneurysmal bone cysts in young children have a high recurrence rate, especially aggressive lesions. Repeat curettage and grafting is often needed but surgical resection is preferred when possible.

Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Orthopedics
  • Skeletal Oncology

Background:

  • Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) are benign, expansile bone tumors.
  • Young children present unique challenges in managing ABCs.

Observation:

  • Seven pediatric patients (≤10 years) with ABCs were reviewed.
  • Six ABCs involved long bones; one involved the clavicle.
  • Initial treatment was curettage and bone grafting.

Findings:

  • A 71% recurrence rate was observed in young children with ABCs.
  • 100% of aggressive or active lesions recurred rapidly (average 8 months).
  • Mitotic index did not predict recurrence.

Implications:

  • High recurrence rates in pediatric ABCs necessitate careful treatment planning.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Aggressive or active lesions require vigilant monitoring and tailored management.
  • Preoperative counseling for parents regarding recurrence risk is crucial.
