  • Understanding current physician satisfaction levels is crucial for addressing workforce issues.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the current state of physician job satisfaction.
  • To identify factors correlated with overall physician satisfaction.

Main Methods:

  • A survey was mailed to 406 physicians in Solano County, California.
  • Anonymous responses were collected and analyzed using several statistical methods.
  • A response rate of 62% (251 physicians) was achieved.

Main Results:

  • 80% of responding physicians reported overall job satisfaction.
  • High percentages felt good about helping patients (92%), patient relationships (93%), colleague relationships (86%), and intellectual stimulation (89%).
  • Finding work "fun" (63%) showed the strongest correlation with overall satisfaction, irrespective of practice type (primary care vs. non-primary care, HMO vs. fee-for-service).

Conclusions:

  • Despite challenges, most physicians in this study experience significant job satisfaction.
  • The ability to find pleasure in work is a key factor in overall physician satisfaction.
  • Positive patient and colleague interactions, along with intellectual engagement, contribute to job fulfillment.
