Area of Science:

  • Infectious Diseases
  • Cardiology
  • Surgical Innovation

Background:

  • Prosthetic valve endocarditis (PVE) poses significant clinical challenges.
  • Salmonella species are an uncommon cause of PVE, with limited case reports.

Observation:

  • A case of Salmonella prosthetic valve endocarditis in a patient with a Björk-Shiley mechanical mitral valve is presented.
  • Diagnosis was confirmed via positive blood cultures and transesophageal echocardiography revealing vegetation.

Findings:

  • This report adds to the scarce literature on Salmonella PVE, with only five previously reported cases.
  • The infection followed a malignant clinical course.

Implications:

  • Early surgical intervention should be strongly considered for Salmonella PVE.
