Summary

Recurrent spontaneous abortion is not linked to abnormal sperm concentration or morphology in men. This study found no significant differences in sperm quality compared to WHO standards or men with successful pregnancies.

Area of Science:

  • Reproductive medicine
  • Andrology
  • Genetics

Background:

  • Recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA) affects a significant portion of couples seeking to conceive.
  • The male factor's contribution to RSA remains incompletely understood.
  • Previous research has yielded conflicting results regarding sperm parameters and RSA.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between seminal fluid parameters and recurrent spontaneous abortion.
  • To compare sperm concentration and morphology in men whose partners have experienced RSA with control groups.

Main Methods:

  • Semen analysis was performed on 98 men whose partners experienced three or more spontaneous abortions.
  • Sperm parameters including ejaculate volume, sperm concentration, and sperm morphology (total and individual defects) were assessed.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Data were compared against established World Health Organization (WHO) standards and a cohort of 17 men with successful pregnancies.
  • Main Results:

    • No significant differences were observed in ejaculate volume between the RSA group and controls.
    • Sperm concentration and the percentage of abnormal sperm morphology did not significantly differ in men with RSA compared to WHO standards or men with successful pregnancies.
    • Specific sperm defects were not found to be significantly associated with recurrent spontaneous abortion.

    Conclusions:

    • Abnormal sperm concentration and morphology are not significantly associated with recurrent spontaneous abortion.
    • These findings suggest that other factors may play a more critical role in the etiology of RSA.
    • Further research is warranted to explore other potential male-contributing factors in recurrent pregnancy loss.
