Abstract:
Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) has been used as a sensitive and specific tool for the determination of steroid hormones. The instruments made great progress in the advent of chemically inert fused silica capillary columns and various sample injection systems. Characteristics of electron impact and chemical ionization methods, and of the derivatization reagent are described. The sensitive method by GC in combination with negative ion chemical ionization MS is also outlined. Solid phase extraction by an octadecylsilyl bonded silica cartridge and an immobilized antibody column as well as chromatographic separation by lipophilic ion-exchange gel for the clean-up of steroid hormones in biological fluids are discussed in this article.
