[Synthesis of antibiotic-glycoside conjugates as potential ligands for bacterial lectins]

Conjugates were prepared from penicillins (ampicillin, amoxicillin) and carbohydrates (mannose, glucose). Only the mannose containing conjugates bind specifically to the fimbriae of mannose sensitive Escherichia coli cells. A significant decrease in the minimal inhibiting concentration of the conjugate toward the bacteria as compared to the starting penicillin could not be observed.
