Background:

  • Type 1 tympanoplasty is a surgical procedure to repair eardrum perforations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine factors influencing surgical success and reperforation rates in type 1 tympanoplasty.
  • To evaluate the procedure's effectiveness in pediatric patients.

  • Retrospective review of medical records from a pediatric hospital.
  • Included 209 tympanoplasties in 183 patients under 18 years old (1985-1989) with at least 6 months follow-up.
  • Surgical success defined as an intact tympanic membrane at 6 months post-op.

Main Results:

  • Overall short-term success rate was 92%; 87% remained free of reperforation.
  • Marginal perforations had lower success rates (86% surgical, 77% long-term).
  • Younger children (<6 years) and those with contralateral otitis media had higher reperforation risk but still achieved good long-term success (81% and 74%, respectively).

Conclusions:

  • Type 1 tympanoplasty is a viable option for patients of all ages.
  • High likelihood of restored normal ear function, even in young children.
