Background:

  • Needle-localized breast biopsy (NLBB) is a common surgical procedure for diagnosing breast abnormalities.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate current practice patterns of needle-localized breast biopsy.
  • To determine if NLBB is overused in specific patient demographics.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of medical records for patients undergoing NLBB.
  • Data collected from June 1988 to October 1990 at a teaching hospital.
  • Analysis of mammographic indications and biopsy outcomes.

  • 125 NLBB procedures were performed; 24 (19%) revealed malignancy.
