Area of Science:

  • Nephrology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Microbiology

Background:

  • Renal actinomycosis is a rare bacterial infection caused by Actinomyces species.
  • It can present with non-specific symptoms, making preoperative diagnosis challenging.

Observation:

  • A 56-year-old male presented with abdominal pain, anorexia, and weight loss.
  • Physical examination revealed tenderness in the right kidney region.
  • Radiological imaging suggested a renal tumor.

Findings:

  • Microscopic examination of the removed right kidney revealed characteristic colonies of Actinomyces.
  • Preoperative differentiation between renal actinomycosis and renal tumor was difficult.

Implications:

  • Surgical removal of the affected kidney followed by targeted antibiotic therapy is a potentially curative approach.
  • This case highlights the importance of considering actinomycosis in the differential diagnosis of renal masses.
  • Prompt treatment can lead to favorable outcomes in renal actinomycosis.
