Summary

Pure ankle dislocations, often caused by motor vehicle accidents in young males, can achieve good outcomes with lateral ligamentous repair. Most patients reported excellent results and no instability post-surgery.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Traumatology

Background:

  • Pure ankle dislocations (without fracture) are rare injuries.
  • These injuries predominantly affect young, active individuals.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the outcomes of surgical management for pure ankle dislocations.
  • To identify prognostic factors and long-term results in this patient cohort.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 14 patients with pure ankle dislocations from 1980-1991.
  • Surgical intervention focused on lateral ligamentous repair in 12 patients.
  • Follow-up ranged from 15 to 122 months.

Main Results:

  • 13 of 14 injuries were open dislocations.
  • 10 out of 12 patients (83%) achieved good to excellent functional outcomes.
  • No patient exhibited signs or symptoms of ankle instability post-repair.
  • One patient required amputation due to severe soft tissue and neurovascular compromise.

Conclusions:

  • Surgical repair of lateral ligamentous structures is effective for pure ankle dislocations.
  • Good to excellent outcomes and stability can be expected in most cases.
  • Early and aggressive management is crucial, especially in open injuries with neurovascular involvement.
